Selling banned skin lighteners online prevail!


BAN Toxics is sounding the alarm after various online shopping sites sold off banned mercury-laden skin lightening creams by 6.6%. In March 2022, the Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG), of which BAN Toxics is a part, published “Skin Lighteners Still Available Online Despite Mercury Discoveries”. The study found that high-mercury SLPs are widely available on a range of popular e-commerce platforms in 17 countries. Of the 271 skin lightening products tested, 129 had mercury levels above the regulatory limit of 1 part per million (ppm).

The Philippines Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued numerous public health warnings against toxic mercury-laden skin whitening cosmetics from 2010 to date. The regulatory agency also advised consumers to buy cosmetic products with FDA marketing authorization, FDA site license (LTO) and product notification certificates. .

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Skin lightening products containing mercury are hazardous to health. Adverse health effects of inorganic mercury in skin lightening creams include: kidney damage, skin rashes, skin discoloration and scarring, reduced skin resistance to bacterial and fungal infections, anxiety, depression, psychosis and peripheral neuropathy. »
