Complaint: online sales on Facebook will be closed

Online shopping will not be banned, however, the Live Shopping feature on Facebook will be closed in October.

Rating: FALSE

Facts: A circulating rumor (at least one major has reprinted it as fact) that we received from our whistleblower line claims that Facebook will shut down online sales on its platform. This rumor is false and was likely the result of poor translation and miscommunication.

Online shopping will not be banned, however, the Live Shopping feature on Facebook will be closed in October.

The Live Shopping feature on Facebook allows online sellers to create a product playlist and tag products in their live videos. However, this feature is not available in the Philippines, that’s why Filipinos don’t really care. Filipino online sellers usually use the comment section while viewers usually type “mine” for a product they want to buy.

According to the Meta web page, they are focusing on Reels on Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s short form video product, to match consumer viewing behavior. Tagging products will still be available on Reels and Instagram.

Why we checked this: Being properly informed of changes in the social media platforms we use is a key characteristic of being a responsible social media user. Although the change implemented by Meta does not really affect Filipino online sellers at the moment, it is always better to watch for future updates on its various platforms.
